The 14.5lb "I Told You So"

The 14.5lb "I Told You So"

They say behind every man is a great woman, but in my case, she’s usually the one wondering why I spend so many hours on the bank. We’ve been together since we were 19, and through every high and low, she’s been my rock. But even after all these years, there was one thing I still needed to do: prove that I actually had the skills to back up all my talk about being an angler.

Proof is in the netting: The 14.5lb momma that changed the conversation.

The 14.5lb Proof

I managed to get her out on the bank with me in early March, just before the close season. The pressure was on. It’s one thing to tell your partner about the "one that got away," but it’s another thing entirely to show them the skill, the patience, and the craft in real-time.

While we were out, she was adamant we’d find something. Then, this 14.5lb momma pike decided to show up. Seeing the look on my wife's face when that fish hit the net was better than any trophy. She was officially dumbfounded. That single moment hides a lifetime of honing skills. It’s about the passion we all share: the quiet work we put in all week just to earn that one perfect moment on the water.

Getting Nerdy: The Rig & Bait

For those who want the "Average Joe" breakdown of how this happened without overcomplicating things, here is exactly how I rigged up:

  • The Bait: Frozen sardines from Lidl. At £3 for a bag of about 15, they are "cheap as chips" and perfect for the job.
  • The Tactic: I keep them frozen and snip the heads off before casting. The head goes in the swim as an attractant, while the body defrosts slowly in the water, leaking natural juices right where you want them.
  • The Rig: A classic float ledger setup.
  • The Gear: Fox EOS 10ft (3lb test curve) with a Fox EOS 7000 reel.
  • The Business End: 65lb 8-strand braid to a home-made 20-inch wire trace with two semi-barbed treble hooks.

The Average Joe Mission

I’m not here for the corporate giants; I’m here for the people who work all week and spend their free time doing what they love. We are imperfect people in an imperfect world, catching Mother Nature’s most perfect specimens. This is the Bankside Promise in action.
